羅蘭巴特在《符號帝國》將語言描述為一種空無,因為語言並沒有固定的本體,而是一個空的符號。於是語言 的傳遞似乎就賦予了符號無限的可能性,這種可能性是超越語言的,就像我們常常形容的某些感受是「 語言難 以表達的 」。

 

藝術家 Anna Tsai 在《 漂泊 ·失語 》個展中以自身在加拿大溫哥華留學的經驗為創作靈感,將曾經難以跨越 語言鴻溝的焦慮及挫敗轉化為藝術符號,重新回顧旅途中結識的人們與故事,試圖找出每段關係建立的源頭,究竟是始於語言交流,還是另有其他?而語言的不通是否足夠成為人際關係中的巨大屏障?

 

此個展將尋找人與人之間溝通媒介的各種可能,探索每一段與人的關係中,那些無法以文字解釋、超越語言的 情感與力量。就如瑞士心理學家 Carl Gustav Jung 曾說:「孤獨的原因不來自於身旁沒有人,而來自於擁有 對自己很重要的事情卻無法跟他人溝通。」而除了語言,我們是否還有其他能傳遞心意或與他人溝通的方式?

Roland Barthes described language as a kind of emptiness in "L'empire des Signes", because language does not have a fixed ontology, but an empty sign. Therefore, the transmission of language seems to endow symbols with infinite possibilities, which are beyond language , as we often describe certain feelings as "language is difficult to express".

 

In the solo exhibition "Lost In Translation", the artist Anna Tsai took her own experience of studying abroad in Vancouver, Canada as inspiration, transformed the anxiety and frustration that had been difficult to cross the language gap into her own art symbols, revisiting the people and stories she met during the journey, trying to find out the start of each relationship, does it come from language communication, or is it something else? Is the language barrier enough to become a huge wall in interpersonal relationships?

 

This solo exhibition will look for various possibilities of communication media between people, explore the emotions and powers that cannot be explained in words from every relationships with human. As Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung said: " Loneliness does not come from having no people about one, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to oneself." Apart from language, do we have other ways to convey our feelings? or the way we communicate with others.

餐桌物語系列 
Dining Table Monogatari Series

藝術家說:「 我在溫哥華最喜歡的地方就是餐桌,因為我喜歡邀請朋友來家裡派對和晚餐。對當時還不太會用英語交友的我來說,聚在一起吃飯是最簡單、最單純的一種交流方式。而在餐桌上無需說太多話,就能自然地體會到那種一起共餐、純粹享分享食物的美好。」

 

《 餐桌物語 》系列作品,分別重現了藝術家在溫哥華認識的,與六位朋友的相遇故事。藝術家將盤子化作記憶的載體、那個開啟人與人間交流的初始,並從過去與這六位朋友留下的影像和信件中篩選出不同時空下的深刻記憶,最終藉由拼貼( 時間重組 )的方式重新回顧與人物共度過的珍貴時光。

 

「 搜集人物檔案及編輯的過程,像是追溯到與這個人相遇的起點。每一次的剪貼、拼湊都是一次又一次的回顧過往,像在時空穿越。我想,這正是我對那個人表達思念最好的一種方式吧。」

"My favorite place in Vancouver is the dining table, because I love inviting friends over for parties and dinners at home. I was struggling to make friends in English at that time, yet gathering around for a meal was the simplest and purest form for me to communicate with others. With minimal words spoken at the table, I found out we could naturally experience the beauty of sharing a meal together and enjoying the time we both had with each others."

 

"Dining Table Monogatari Series" depict the artist's encounters with six friends they met in Vancouver. The artist transforms plates into vessels of memories, symbolizing her initial connections with people in Vancouver. By sifting through images and letters left behind by these six people from different times and spaces, the artist selects profound memories and reconstructs them through collage (temporal reassembling). 

 

" The process of collecting profiles and editing feels like tracing back to the start of how I met each person. Each cut and collage is a throwback on the past, like traversing through time and space. I believe this is the best way for me to express longing for that person."

              融於心深處  From The Bottom Of Heart 

《 融於心深處 》集結了藝術家過去的生活經驗和觀察。影片以「 愛像什麼?」作爲發展核心,結合文字、聲音、影像三種創作語言,從媒材和工具層面來探討語言符號的各種可能性。

 

微波爐的融化意象試圖讓語言能回到最初始的狀態。字幕的捨棄、聲音的消逝,到最終的影像播放。作者透過各式媒材的切換,讓人進一步去體會不同媒介的傳遞,以及感知那些在不同語言的表達之下,所留存下來的感受。

藝術家說:「 我一直在追尋那些超越語言的事物。我發現這些感受,它們雖難以用文字說明或抄記,卻能活在身體裡很久很久。」

The artwork “ From The Bottom Of Heart " brings together the artist's past life experiences and observations. The film revolves around the question, "What is love?" and combines three creative languages: words, sound, and visuals, to explore the various possibilities of linguistic symbols from the perspectives of media and tools.

 

The melting imagery of a microwave attempts to bring language back to its most primal state. We see subtitles are discarded, sounds fade away, then it end up the visuals. Through the switching of various mediums, the artist allows the audience to further comprehend the transmission of different media and experience the feelings that remain beneath expressions in different languages.

“ I have been constantly searching for those things that go beyond language. I have found that these feelings, though difficult to explain and transcribe in words, can live within the body for a very long time.” from the artist Anna Tsai.
